Mary Magdalene
mary magdalene

pattern

sometimes, people say that mary magdalene was the spouse of JESUS (such as the case of "the da vinci code" etc), but their claims are hoax. they refer to the heretic books of gnosis, like "gospel of thomas" and "gospel of phillip" to support their story, however, we must know that the authorized gospels (matthew, mark, luke and john) were all written around 50-100A.D., but the gnostic gospels were consisted around 3-5 centuries, much later time of JESUS.

it has been said that the "gospel of phillip" clarifies that JESUS' wife was magdalene, but even the gnostic book does not clearly say so.

magdalene is described as "the companion of the LORD". the original greek terminology is "koinonos" which indicated various range of intimacy, from the intimate accompany to the business partner. the same word is used in the bible, too (mat 23:30, luke 5:10 etc.), but these do not show the sexual relationship. furthermore, gnosis disdains the physical body, the word in "gospel of phillip" should be read as the spiritual relationship.

in another part of the gnostic book, JESUS kissed mary magdalene and people say this is the sign of the wedded pairs. however, in other gnostic bible, "apocalypse of james", JESUS kissed james, too, when the resurrected CHIRST delivers the "hidden knowledge" to james. the kissing is very symbolic to the gnosis and it expresses the one who is kissed is in the special position and he/she receives the "hidden knowledge". the gnostic followers regard mary magdalen is superior to the apostles, so the kissing should be the sign that clarifies she is the ultimate apostle of JESUS, not the physical spouse of the LORD.

as mentioned earlier, the gnostic sect hates the body (and the physical substances) as "evil", for the world was created by the inferior god, not by the true GOD. they teach that we must get out of the physical world by the hidden knowledge. so, the claim that the JESUS and magdalene's relationship was physical contradicts the belief of the gnosis. from the gnostic viewpoint, their relationship can be only read as spiritual.

New Testament
eucharist

do we really know that the "new testament" is the eucharist, not the bible?

the first gospel was written in the late 1st century. until then, there had not been any written documents for the christians. people started gathering the books from the 2nd century, and what we call now "the new testament" bible was completed in the 4th century. the bible itself is not the new testament and it was initially called “books of the new testament”.

then, what were the christians doing without the bible? well, the eucharist itself is the new testament, so there was no need for them to depend on the written documents for remembering and celebrating the new testament. the bible itself was edited so that people of later time could prepare the eucharist accordingly. our LORD never commanded to write down anything, but to do what HE taught.

furthermore, JESUS only mentiones the “new testament” once. it is when he establishes the eucharist during the last supper (luke 22:20). also, st. paul clarifies that the new testament is the blood of CHRIST (1 cor.11:25).

the new testament completes the old, and the passover of the old testament is completed by the passover of the new testament. there was the special liturgy for celebrating the passover meal. on holy thursday, when JESUS and HIS apostles gathered at tabernacle to celebrate the passover meal together, our LORD set up the eucharist (luke 22:19-20). HE added something new to the old liturgy. the apostles might not know at that time what HE did and what HE meant with it.

the crucifixion was carried out outside the wall of jerusalem. in the jewish community, the sacrifice must be offered on the alter in the temple. so, if there were not the eucharistic event on holy thursday, the crucifixion was merely the roman execution. but, JESUS freely offered HIMSELF as the sacrifice of love through the eucharist, the crucifixion became the supreme sacrifice. the blood of lambs which had been offered for the atonement of mankind during the old testament time, the blood of CHRIST, the lamb of GOD, completed the salvation once and for all.

so, if we are not the eucharistic chrsitians, we are not the christians of the new testament!

Our Lady of the Sign

pattern

our lady of the sign

another amazingly beautiful icon of mr. malin dimov!

this icon is called "our lady of the sign" or "panagia" in greek. it depicts the moment when archangel gabriel brought mary the message of GOD and she accepted to be the mother of GOD (luke 1: 38). also, the name "our lady of the sign" comes from the prophesy of isaiah (isaiah 7:14).

you may notice a bit weird look of JESUS. he should be a baby but he looks like an old man, too. this shows while he is the son of mary, he is the eternal GOD. JESUS raised his right hand to bless people, and in his left hand, he grabs the scroll which indicates that he is the teacher. the gold robe represents the divine glory.

the icon is also called "platytera" which means "more spacious" in greek. by containing the CREATOR of the universe in her womb, mary has become platytera ton ouranon: "more spacious than the heavens".

Left Cheek, Right Cheek

pattern

the verse from today's reading, " but if one strike thee on thy right cheek, turn to him also the other. (matthew 5:39)" can be misinterpreted by most of the people, even by the christians themselves. it is not about the non-resistant!!

according to saint augustine, one of the great church fathers from the early church, commented that the "left cheek" represents the earthly/freshly good thing while the "right cheek" stands for the heavenly/spiritually good thing. thus, this verse is telling us to protect the heavenly/spiritually good things even by forsaking the earthly/freshly good things.

this interpretation is quite biblical and reasonable if we know what "left/right" symbolize in the jewish tradition as well as we see the whole chapter 5 of matthew's gospel.

in the jewish tradition, "right" stands for something "good, powerful and superior" while "left" means something "bad, weak and inferior". we can see these connotations throughout the bible.

also, the consistent theme for the chapter 5 is to gain heaven and there are numerous contrasting examples of "things that lead us to eternal life vs things that lead us to destruction" in this chapter. based on the context of the chapter, JESUS is insisting to protect heavenly good by forsaking earthly things for the eternal salvation, not telling the people about the no-resistant attitude.

when we read the bible, it is absolutely wrong to pick up some verse for our own interpretation, but we need to understand each verse in the whole context.

Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum.

Deo gratia!!

our new pope, francis I!! the first pope from latin america, the first from jesuits and the first "francis".

3 in the morning in tokyo. i don't usually wake up around this time, but i checked to see if the conclave had been completed. but, it was just the time when the white smoke came out of the chimney to inform the people of the new pope!

the enormous crowd cheering from the square of st. peter's! even the sound of church bells were drowned by the shouts of joy! soon after, the marching bands and the swiss guards entered into the square.

about an hour later, the lights of st. peter's lit up and cardinal jean-louis tauran from france came out to the terrace, announcing in latin; " annuntio vobis gaudium magnum. habemus papa!" "i announce you with great joy. we have a pope!"

the new pope in white appeared. cardinal jorge mario bergoglio from argentina is now pope francis.

he seemed very humble and gentle pope like john xxiii. our new pope started prayers with the crowd and sent his message and blessing to rome and to the world.

according to cardinal dolan from US, pope jumped in the bus for the cardinals when they returned to the hotel, not by the holy father's car!!

the inaugural mass will be held on march 19, the feast of st. joseph. DEO GRATIA!

Sanguis Christi(サンク゛イス・クリスティ):ラテン語で“キリストの御血”という意味。

taddy

There are many different small rosaries/rosary rings, but i haven't found the one which i really like, so i made it by myself.

SANGUIS CHRISTI: it means the "blood of christ" in latin. the pear shaped red swarovski is used to express a drop of precious blood of christ which was shed for our salvation.

LACRIMA MARIAE: it mean the "tear of mary" in latin. the pear shaped blue topaz is used to express a drop of tear she shed for our salvation.

You can put the rosary in the pocket and pray while walking. for the ladies, it can be used for the accessary ring when it is not used for prayer:)

"and behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world." - Matthew 28:20-

This is a verse from today's Gospel reading. What a great promise!! Immanuel (=God with us) that Isaiah prophesied does not simply with us, but "always" and "until the end of time". This fact is indeed important when we pray.

God is there always when we are deep in prayer, or when the praises burst out from our heart, or when we feel dull and cannot pray or when we are too tired to pray. God's presence is not influenced by our state of mind, physical condition and feeling. He is there always regardless of our condition.

So, do not be taken away by your feeling and emotion. No matter how you are, just simply lift up your inner eyes to the Lord. You don't have to be anybody. Offer yourself as you are. This is the first step of real prayer.

Puer Natus est Nobis

pattern

"The people sitting in darkness has seen a great light, and to those sitting in the country and shadow of death, to them has light sprung up. (Matthew 4:16)"

A verse from today's gospel. It connects to the visitation/adoration of the Magi yesterday. By the way, the word translated as "to adore" originally means "to step forward and kiss" in greek (proskyno)" . While I was meditating on today's verse, a vision came into my mind.

There was a little chubby baby in front of me. his tiny fists were clenched. He was threshing his toots and was crying vigorously. All the babies are so innocent and so cute and they melt out heart and make us smile.

But, for this baby, one thing is totally different from the others. From the very moment when His human life started, He was always living for the others, not for Himself. He burdened Himself with the sins of the world and sacrificed Himself for our redemption. The little hands and toots would be pierced as well as His tiny heart, which was beating only for our salvation.

Often times, I easily yield to the temptations. I have been tainted by my numerous sins. I sometime find myself in the total darkness of solitude and anxiety. I am indeed unworthy to stand in front of the God incarnate, but this little baby is inviting me to kiss him, saying "have no fear. kiss my toots, hands and heart".

Humbly praying the Jesus Prayer, "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, Have mercy on me, the sinner.", while acknowledging my own misery, I step forward to kiss him in deep awe and love.
