Mater Mea
sweet mary

pattern

a bit reflection on today's reading (mat 12 46-50). the bible mentions "JESUS' brethren" several times. some protestants insist that mary could not be virgin because JESUS had some brothers, but if we read the bible carefully, it is not so.

1) these brethren are never called the children of mary, although JESUS himself is. (jn 2:1, 19:25, acts 1:14)

2) james and joseph are sons of a different mary. (mt 27:56, mk 15:40)

3) it is unlikely that JESUS would entrust his mother to the apostle john at his crucifixion if he had some other brothers to look after her.

4) the greek word "adelphoi", meaning "brethren", has broader meaning than blood brothers. since ancient aramaic did not have the word for "cousins", they used "brethren" for relationship other than the blood brothers. same cases can be found in OT many times, too, and paul used it as a synonym for his israelite kinsman in rom 9:3.

also, some people may think JESUS is too harsh on his mother here. however, he is actually revealing her great divine maternity.

he says "for whoever does the will of my FATHER in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother. (mt 12:50)" and we can find similar remark in luke. " as JESUS was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.” he replied, “blessed rather are those who hear the word of GOD and obey it.”(lk 11 28-29)".

his point is not to deny the biological parent but to clarify there is far better thing than being a physical mother. he says those who do the will of GOD, hear the word of GOD and obey it is his mother. in other words, he is pointing out that to have faith in mind is greater than to carry the body of the LORD in the womb. for by mary's total faith in and obedience to GOD, JESUS was incarnated (lk 1:26-38). her faith bore the CHRIST, made her "mother of GOD" and let her be the mother of all people. so, she is the true mother and JESUS is emphasizing her greatness in his seemingly cold remarks.

Left Cheek, Right Cheek

pattern

the verse from today's reading, " but if one strike thee on thy right cheek, turn to him also the other. (matthew 5:39)" can be misinterpreted by most of the people, even by the christians themselves. it is not about the non-resistant!!

according to saint augustine, one of the great church fathers from the early church, commented that the "left cheek" represents the earthly/freshly good thing while the "right cheek" stands for the heavenly/spiritually good thing. thus, this verse is telling us to protect the heavenly/spiritually good things even by forsaking the earthly/freshly good things.

this interpretation is quite biblical and reasonable if we know what "left/right" symbolize in the jewish tradition as well as we see the whole chapter 5 of matthew's gospel.

in the jewish tradition, "right" stands for something "good, powerful and superior" while "left" means something "bad, weak and inferior". we can see these connotations throughout the bible.

also, the consistent theme for the chapter 5 is to gain heaven and there are numerous contrasting examples of "things that lead us to eternal life vs things that lead us to destruction" in this chapter. based on the context of the chapter, JESUS is insisting to protect heavenly good by forsaking earthly things for the eternal salvation, not telling the people about the no-resistant attitude.

when we read the bible, it is absolutely wrong to pick up some verse for our own interpretation, but we need to understand each verse in the whole context.
